The Telefunken 12AX7 Selected Tubes provide a fascinating case study in the value of “selected” vintage glass. While it is easy to be skeptical of the massive price gap between standard and selected versions, a direct comparison reveals that the difference is far from subtle. Originally acquired with a McIntosh 275, these tubes initially seemed overpriced at $225 each, but further critical listening proved their worth. When tested against standard Telefunken Smooth Plates, the selected variants transformed the listening experience, offering a level of 3D quality and air that the regular versions simply could not match.
