I came to this one from the tube side of the fence, which I think matters for how the rest of this reads. I’ve spent years listening through many tube amps, and I wanted to know whether the modern Class D everyone keeps calling “measurably perfect” would actually make me want to sit down and listen. So I lived with a NC502MP-based amp for a while, and this is what I found.
What the module is
The NC502MP is a complete two-channel amplifier on a single board, made by Hypex in the Netherlands. That’s the part I find genuinely clever as a builder — the switch-mode power supply, the standby supply, both amplifier channels, and all the protection circuitry live on one compact slab roughly 230 x 115 x 47mm and weighing about a kilo. No toroid to mount, no separate PSU board to wire, no rail fusing to design around. It auto-switches between 115V and 230V mains on its own.
The amplification is Hypex’s NCore topology — a self-oscillating Class D loop that takes its feedback from the speaker terminals themselves rather than from somewhere earlier in the chain. That one design decision is why the frequency response stays flat no matter what impedance I hang off it, which is something most cheap Class D boards can’t manage because their output filters interact with the load.
The numbers that matter
Power: 500W per channel into 4Ω, 350W into 8Ω, both channels driven
THD+N: around 0.0018% — and flat across the band, not climbing at the extremes
Signal-to-noise: 124dB
Output impedance: under 3 milliohms, so damping factor is enormous
Frequency response: 10Hz–50kHz, +0/-3dB, and load-independent
I checked what I could of this on my own bench and it held up. On paper there is essentially nothing to complain about here — this is a better-measuring amplifier than most of what I own.
How it sounds to me
Dead quiet. That’s the first thing. I put my ear to the tweeter and heard nothing at all, which is not something I can say about most of my gear. Every bit of hiss, hum, and grain I’ve grown used to tolerating is simply gone.
The problem is what came with that silence. The NC502MP is clean in a way that tips over into analytical, and after an hour or two of listening I noticed I was ready to be done. It’s not the harsh, edgy fatigue I get from cheap Class D boards — that’s a different and much worse thing, and this module is clearly a tier above it. But the fatigue is still there, just quieter and more polite about it. I kept finding reasons to get up.
The same dryness runs right through the midrange, and this is where it lost me. Vocals are clean, precise, perfectly placed — and lifeless. There’s no bloom, no harmonic weight, nothing that makes a voice feel like it’s in the room with me. If you’re coming from tubes, forget about the midrange fullness you’re used to. It simply isn’t here, and no amount of resolution substitutes for it.
In my hybrid system
I ran the NC502MP two ways: straight up as a single stereo amp driving everything, and in my hybrid setup, where a solid state amp handles bass up to 400Hz and a 300B takes the midrange and top. I had some hope for the second configuration — hand the Hypex the job it’s objectively best at, let the tubes do what tubes do, and let the crossover keep them out of each other’s way.
It didn’t work the way I wanted. Even confined to the bottom 400Hz, the Hypex dried out the entire presentation. The system as a whole lost dimension and went flatter and more matter-of-fact, and I could hear it well above the crossover point where the module wasn’t even playing. I don’t have a tidy explanation for why the character bleeds upward like that, but it does, and it’s not subtle.
What convinced me it wasn’t the hybrid concept’s fault was swapping in a PS Audio BHK 250 on the same duty. That amp integrated beautifully — it didn’t just stay out of the way, it lifted the whole system, adding weight and dimensionality that carried right through the 300B’s range. Same speakers, same crossover, same tubes on top; completely different result.
Bass is a genuine strength on paper and mostly in practice. It’s tight, fast, and it punches — the damping factor is doing exactly what the spec sheet promises, and nothing gets loose or wooly no matter how hard I push it. But set it next to a good Class A/B amp and the texture goes missing. I get the shape and the impact of a bass note without much sense of the instrument inside it. The outline is perfect; the substance is thin.
Final verdict
The NC502MP is an engineering achievement I have real respect for. It’s compact, efficient, easy to build around, and it measures better than amplifiers costing many times more. If what you need is enormous headroom, absolute silence, and iron-fisted bass control in a box that doesn’t weigh forty pounds, this module delivers all of it.
But I can’t call it musical, and I won’t pretend otherwise. It’s clean to the point of being clinical, the midrange is accurate but empty, and the bass has authority without character. It’s a good amplifier that I don’t especially enjoy listening to, and one that didn’t earn its place even in the one role I thought would suit it best — and for me that’s the whole point of the exercise. If you’re a tube listener thinking this will finally end the tube-versus-Class-D debate for you, it won’t. It’ll just make you appreciate what your tubes are actually doing.
