Protecting Silkscreen

Protecting Silkscreen

To preserve the delicate silkscreen found on vintage vacuum tubes, a more professional approach to storage is recommended. Because the labeling on most New Old Stock (NOS) tubes is notoriously fragile, even the simple act of removing a tube from its original cardboard box can cause the graphics to rub off or degrade over time.

Recommended Preservation Method

A highly effective and low-cost solution is the use of small, individual poly bags. By following these steps, you can maintain the aesthetic value and authenticity of your collection:

  • Utilize Poly Packaging: Standard 2×3 inch resealable plastic bags are ideal for most small-signal tubes.
  • Insert Before Boxing: Place the tube securely inside the plastic sleeve before inserting it into its storage carton.
  • Friction Reduction: The plastic provides a protective barrier that eliminates direct friction between the cardboard and the glass.

Even in tight-fitting original boxes, these thin bags fit easily without adding significant bulk. This method allows for frequent inspection and handling of your vacuum tubes without the risk of damaging the irreplaceable historical silkscreening.
